BEFORE you begin your migration, all of your current email is imported into the ZL archive and is indexed as normal.  

Attachments are fully stubbed and placed in the archive.   You then have a significantly reduced mail store which is ready to be converted / migrated using your standard tools.

AFTER you have migrated to your new mail system and the email "headers" have been restored into the new mail system, the stubbed attachments and email contents can be restored or searched for from the ZL archive if required.
